Your Kid's Internet Safety:
How to Block Websites

One of the key means of protecting kids when they log on to the Internet is website blocking.

Website blocking allows parents to ensure that pornographic content and images, violence, inappropriate games, and much more aren't accessible to their kids when they log on.

But many parents who aren't computer savvy ask, "How do I block websites to protect my kid's internet safety?"

Blocking sites on the Internet varies according to the age of your child. Are all of your children very small?

If so, many Internet browsers offer basic website blocking. Each browser is different, but in most cases you can block websites by their URL, or Internet address.

However, blocking sites through such a simple apparatus as an Internet browser won't hold up for very long, particularly when such precautions are very simple to disable.

Kids today learn to navigate the web much faster than adults, and it's wise to rely on parental control software to block websites as soon as your kids are of school age.

Parental control software is software that parents can purchase and download onto the child's computer. It allows parents to monitor Internet use, and the best programs allow them to block sites with the click of a button.

Sites commonly monitored/blocked by parents:

  • pornography
  • violent websites
  • gaming sites
  • chatting websites
  • drugs/narcotics
  • shopping
  • webmail/free email (Hotmail, GMail, YMail, etc.)
  • social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace)

  • This way parents can be aware of what their child sees online, who they meet on the Internet, and as well as blocking inappropriate sites or materials that kids shouldn't see.

Is parental control software for you?

To put it plainly, if you have kids and a computer, the answer is yes.

Even kids who don't talk to strangers on the street might not know that the new "friend" they met online is actually an adult online predator, waiting for them to slip up and mention where they go to school or live.

And it's easy to stumble upon inappropriate sites online, particularly when there are so many websites out there dedicated to porn, violence, hate speech or hate crimes, gambling, and more.

Most parents wouldn't let their child see a movie that featured violent or other adult content; allowing your kids to surf the net unsupervised and without restrictions is just as bad, if not worse, for several reasons:
    1. Kids exploring the Internet on their own have no one to talk about what they're seeing.
    2. Kids can easily stop, rewind, replay, and review things again, again, and again.
    3. The Internet gives kids the ability to easily jump from one inappropriate thing to another.
    4. Adult and violent content sites are often plagued with viruses, spyware, and other malware, which anyone, especially a youngster, can all-too-easily and unknowingly infect the family computer with.
    5. There are no limits to what they can encounter.
If you're considering purchasing parental control software make sure that it offers content filtering and website blocking as well as website monitoring.

Some programs offer monitoring, so you'll know what your child is doing online, but relatively few means to block websites or control what they see when you're not around.

The best programs offer very pro-active means of website blocking, like pre-made lists of sites and topics you might want to block, and an easy means of doing so.

This means that you won't have to figure out how to block websites, since doing so will become fairly self explanatory.

For parental control software that will show you how to block websites quickly and efficiently, we suggest Net Nanny, CyberPatrol, and WebWatcher.
