Daniweb.com asks in their Internet safety forum, can there be a safer Internet without "better security" tools like parental controls.

The answer is a resounding NO, and we can't agree more.

For example, few people knew that yesterday was "Safer Internet Day," but this isn't a surprise since so few people are aware of the dangers of the Internet either.

If they did concerned moms and dads would be scrambling to buy parental controls for their PCs faster than you can say "online predator."

So here are a few points from Daniweb to make a parent's hair curl:

75% of kids polled admitted to being online after 11pm on a school night. This means that while mom and dad are sleeping, their kids are online chatting with who-knows-who.

Out of the 774 kids aged 11 to 14 years old, nearly 63% admitted to having "friends" in their contact list that they had never met in person. These "friends" could be anyone!

And the kicker....

Over 11% of the kids had agreed to meet someone they had never seen in person before, most of them in a public park.

It's terrifying, but it's happening. This is why parental controls are mandatory in today's world - kids are surfing the Internet in a dangerous environment full of predators, cyberbullies and more.
