Parental Control Software and Sex Offender Registries
As the death of Sarah Haley Foxwell has shown us, sex offender registries should not be relied upon as the only means of keeping predators away from our kids.
There is no better means of keeping your kids safe than to minimize their exposure to dangerous individuals as much as is possible today, and this includes parental control software.
Foxwell's story is heartbreaking - the man accused of her abduction, and soon to be charged with her murder, was a registered sex offender. As it says in the article at delmarvanow.com, most of the people in the area were unaware of his status as a dangerous rapist.
And while registries are a helpful means for parents to know who lives in their neighborhood, they aren't the last word when it comes to keeping kids safe.
Simply put, parents are.
But keeping your kids safe today can be (we know from experience) complicated and time-consuming. This is why digital media, including sex offender registries and parental control software, can aid vigilant parents in knowing who is out there and how these individuals might go about approaching kids.
It's also good to ask questions - when your child goes to a sleepover, who will be there? Who might be there? Have the employees at their school been through background screening?
And who are their new "friends" online?
The Internet can be a dangerous space for kids, and parental control software is a great tool to help with that.
What happens in day to day life is another issue - and offers parents plenty of worries to keep them busy during the day, and awake at night.

Parental Controls Software

The bottom line is that if parents REALLY want to keep their kids safe online, they need to know what said kids are doing on the computer, and what is happening in their online lives. Blocks and filters are easy to get around, and talking alone will get you nowhere… (if you think your kids are going to tell you, honestly, everything they are doing online – you are a fool). Education is a great thing, and very necessary, but how can you consider yourself educated if you don’t know the simplest information – like what your kids are really doing. If you have monitoring software, like our PC Pandora (www.pcpandora.com), you will know everything they do and will be able to talk to them about it. If you aren’t monitoring and don’t know what they are really doing, how can you be sure they are safe? It’s not an issue of privacy (I have no idea where and when kids were granted endless privacy because they exist – in my day privacy was earned through trust and an established good behavior record), nor is it an issue of trust – it’s called being a 21st century parent. If you don’t know what your kids are doing online, you aren’t doing your job as a parent. If you aren’t monitoring what your kids do online and watch them, someone else will…

Your kids internet safety depends on you, the parent. You can set rules, limit your child’s time online but if you are not actively involved with their Internet usage you will never know if they are putting themselves in danger, that's why we need Parental Control Software.
