Rape Case Could Have Been Prevented with Parental Control Software
Whether it's Dateline's show "To Catch a Predator," or standard after-school special TV shows designed to warn us about the dangers of the Internet, we've all heard about cases where parental control software would have come in very handy.
And the case reported in Michigan's State News is, unfortunately, more of the same.
A professor at MSU has been arrested for criminal sexual conduct with a 13-year old girl he met on a social networking site.
According to the defendant, the girl had told him she was 18 years old, though her page at the dating site where they met listed her as 30 years old.
The two of them met at the library before heading back to his apartment. And her parents, who might have dropped her off at that library, had no idea who she was going to meet when she went there.
This is why parental control software is SO important for parents today. Kids are notorious for keeping things from their parents, but when it comes to meeting strangers on the Internet such secrecy just can't be tolerated.
Today's best parental control software offers parents the ability to monitor social media sites, block inappropriate "friends," and keep tabs not just on who their child is talking to, but what is being said.
The article goes on to say that "people" need to be aware that the "friends" they make on the Internet might not be who they say they are. However, in the case of minors, it's really the parents who need to be aware, and who need to take steps to protect their children from online sexual predators, cyber bullies, and the like.
