Parental control software sells your childs chat data to marketers
According to the Orlando Sentinel, EchoMetrix, the maker of Sentry/Family Safe parental control software, is selling the chat data of it's users to marketers.
The company says that the child's personal information is completely secure as it does not share that data with the marketer. EchoMetrix states that the only information being shared is the age of the child. (The age of the child is entered by the parent when the software settings are implemented.)
The parental control software monitors and records chats and IM's on social networking sites like FaceBook and MySpace. Marketers find this data useful because it give them a snapshot into how kids are relating to each other and to discover the latest trends.
In essence, marketers are looking to get into the mind of your child in order to profit.
Personally, it simply doesn't sit well with me knowing that a company is profiting from my child's computer communications.
It makes it that much tougher to accept that profiting when the intent of the original purchase of that software was to protect my child by monitoring their computer usage.
If you already have the software and want to opt out of this feature you can do so by going to the EchoMetrix website.
We've reviewed dozens of computer monitoring software and know of two that are excellent and don't share marketing information (at least to our knowledge they don't.)
